February 2010 marks several important anniversaries for the Scouting movement. In the United States, February 8, 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America by William D. Boyce and a group of outstanding leaders.   In England, February 22,  2010 marks the 153rd anniversary of the birth of the "Chief Scout of the World," Lord Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell.   2010 also marks the 103rd anniversary of Lord Baden-Powell founding the Scouting movement in England.

The World Organization of the Scout Movement he founded estimates more than 500 million women and men from most countries and cultures in the world will have promised to live by the Scout Promise and Law by 2010. The body describes World Scouting as the largest youth organization in the world, with more than 28 million scouts in 216 countries and territories.

The Boy Scouts of America designates the Sunday that falls before February 8th (Scouting Anniversary Day) as Scout Sunday, which is the primary date to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to Scouting. However, each chartered organization can use either of two other options to celebrate this special day.
An organization can adopt a specific Sunday to celebrate. In the instance of the United Methodist Church, Scout Sunday is celebrated on the second Sunday in February. It also is permissible for a local church to celebrate on the Sunday most acceptable to the pastor and congregation.

This year, Scout Sunday will be celebrated at Magnolia United Methodist Church on Sunday, February 14th.   Our Scouting Ministry gratefully acknowledges Capri’s steadfast support. She is allowing our Scouts to actually do the service for Scout Sunday. Last year we had over 50 Scouts participate including Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers.   We also had over 50 Scouting Leaders and parents present to show their appreciation to Magnolia United Methodist Church for supporting their sons and daughters. The worship service will be followed with a reception that includes cake and punch and displays of the equipment and activities representative of Scouting. Our Scouting units are looking forward to the opportunity of providing the service again on Scout Sunday.

                                     The Trail to Eagle

I want to introduce you to our three young men who earned the prestigious honor of becoming Eagle Scouts in 2008. With these three Scouts, we have a total of twenty-seven young men who have earned this rank in Troop 1114 in its 34 year history.

Sam Corbett – Eagle Scout March 31, 2008

Sam started in Scouting as a Tiger Cub in 1996 and progressed through the ranks in Cub Scouting, earning Bobcat, Wolf, Bear, the Webelos Badge, and the Arrow of Light before crossing into Boy Scouting in March 2001. Sam was also elected to be a member of the Order of the Arrow.

Sam’s Eagle Project benefited Magnolia United Methodist Church in Magnolia, Texas and required 95 hours of labor. He is a senior at Magnolia High School. Sam is the son of Doug Greinert and Michelle Allen of Magnolia.

In addition to scouting, Samuel has been involved with FFA at Magnolia High School and will be a “recommended” graduate in May. He plans to attend Lone Star College in the fall and then transfer to Sam Houston to pursue a Criminal Justice degree and become a game warden.

Josh Maywald – Eagle Scout June 20, 2008

Josh started in Scouting as a Tiger Cub in 1996 and progressed through the ranks in Cub Scouting, earning Bobcat, Wolf, Bear, the Webelos Badge, and the Arrow of Light before crossing into Boy Scouting in June 2001.

Josh’s Eagle Project benefited The First Baptist Church of Magnolia and required 229 hours of labor. He is now a freshman at Sam Houston State University at Huntsville. Josh is the son of Mickey and Vickie Maywald of Magnolia.

In addition to scouting, Josh has been actively involved with the youth group at First Baptist Church of Magnolia, Obadiah, and Junior Achievement. He graduated from Magnolia High School with nearly 30 hours of college credit. He’ll graduate from Sam Houston State with a Bachelor degree in Forensic Chemistry and a Minor in Criminal Justice and will continue on to obtain his Masters. His goal is to be a Criminologist for the FBI one day.

Parker Perego – Eagle Scout August 19, 2008

Parker started in Scouting as a Boy Scout in 2006 and progressed through the ranks in Boy Scouting, earning Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and now Eagle in less than three years. This is quite an accomplishment.

In addition to scouting, Parker’s interests include aviation and computers.
